What is class?
It's a taxonomic rank between phylum and order. The word Class comes from the latin word classis. Their a lower rank for class, it's call subclass. This term was introduced by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, a french botanist . He introduced it in his classification of plants Eléments de botanique in 1649. Carolus Linnaeus popularized this term in 1735 where he divided all of his kingdoms in classes, in Systema Naturae. But only the animal kingdom is similar to the one today.

The blue whale, belongs to the class Mammalia. In order to be in this class, the animal needs to produce milk (only females), they need to have hair, for example with the whales when they are baby, they are born with a moustache. They need to be endothermic, the body is in a constant temperature, and having a develop brain. |
